As a way of making up for lost time as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, there will be two albums released most months on RTR throughout 2020 and into 2021. The third double bundle features Hymns57 - 'Slö Tunng' (RTR029) and Mi Cosa de Resistance - 'Blank Polaroids' (RTR030). Both albums go hand in hand, celebrating warmth, texture, and an immersive sense of nostalgia, tied together by artwork from Steven De Taeye.

While working primarily with guitars, effects, pianos and synth, Hymns57 is the solo project of Belgian/Canadian artist Steven de Taeye. An arbiter of ambient noise and his sound ventures have produced over a dozen releases to date. Including releases on Whitelabrecs (Home Diaries Series) and two features on Rusted Tone Recordings' annual compilations. Hymns57 often adopts field recording, found sounds and samples to orchestrate a multivariate sonic landscape. Layers of carefully woven tape loops and reel to reel loops offer a temporary memory palace of unique textures that evoke a lingering nostalgia, a formula designed to immerse you into a dynamic and audio experience.

On his newest release here on RTR, ‘Slö Tungg’ showcases a sense of patience and a focus on delivering emotions in a more concise time frame. Moving away from the track lengths being in the double digits. The tracks on ‘Slö Tungg’ create subtle passages for the listener to move through. Pushing those end of summer vibes to the forefront as the autumnal season and its colour changing takes shape within the 13 tracks here.

Nostalgia is the wheelhouse of Hymns57, and he pulls all the feelings that come with it and places them gently within the songs, leaving subtle hints and personal secrets along the way, like a trail of sonic breadcrumbs: always leading you back home.

Over the five years since the birth of the Hymns57 moniker and project, Steven has been able to hone his craft and blur the lines between drone, ambient, experimental and electro-acoustic work. Melding it all into concise pieces that offers the listener a place of solitude and sonic exploration.

The moniker of Hymns57 also is the host of the Friday night radio program Aural Tethers on CFRU93.3fm and the founder of the A.T label as well. He is also one half of the duo (ph)authers with his cohort Fossil Hunting Collective.

have yet to translate the song titles so the artist's intentions are somewhat of a mystery to me, but the wavering surface noise creates the theme of a dialogue between music & technology before becoming invisible to my ears. this conjures memories of listening to music as a child (long before the sterility of digital media), when i rarely took notice of the hiss & pops of records, 8-tracks, tapes, & am radio because they were a normal, necessary aspect of recorded sound. nice to be back again.
